What Homeowners Should Know about Sod Installation & Soil Preparation

How do you prepare soil for sod installation?

We remove weeds and old grass, loosen and amend the soil, adjust pH, and level the surface and roll the sod with a push drum filled with the weight of 30 to 40 lbs of water, to ensure optimal sod contact and drainage.

How much does sod installation cost?

Costs vary by yard size, chosen sod type, and site conditions. We offer upfront, detailed quotes tailored to your project. Fescue Sod, which you only want to install in fall, winter, and spring, is more costly to install because it requires deeper tilling so the roots can more easily penetrate the soil. A deep root root system, along with an automated irrigation system are critical to the success of the heat sensitive Fescue.

How often should new sod be watered?

New sod thrives with frequent, light watering for the first two weeks, then deeper, less frequent watering as roots get established. The trick to being successful when establishing sod, is to pull back a corner of the sod and look for a film of moisture. It is easy to overwater sod, so look for pooling water.

Can I lay sod over my existing lawn?

No For the best results, we remove old turf and weeds first. This ensures new sod roots deeply with no competition.

What types of sod work best locally?

Fescue, Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine are all excellent choices for Triangle lawns—selected based on sun, usage, and care preferences. Fescue is our favorite for shaded yards, deep tilling and an automatic irrigation system is encouraged. For full sun, Zoysia is our first choice, Bermuda is great for large projects and less maintenance is required.
